The annual joint exercise “Varblaserünnak,” organized by the Center for Combat and Disaster Medicine at the Estonian National Defense Academy, took place this week in Tartu. More than 160 conscripts, active-duty servicemen, reservists, and U.S. medics participated in the exercise, with the aim of practicing how to operate as a unified and effective medical system in a crisis situation. Varblaserünnak is also the final major preparatory stage before the Kevadtorm 2026 large-scale exercise.
The exercise began with the handling of casualties at ROLE 1, or the battalion level, and proceeded through all stages of care, from the initial casualty collection point to the ROLE 2 field hospital. During the exercise, teamwork was practiced in the handling of trauma patients, evacuation, and at the triage point; reservists’ knowledge of operating under conditions of limited resources was improved; and bottlenecks in rapidly evolving tactical medicine were identified and resolved. To ensure a realistic experience, injured actors were covered in artificial blood and various wounds, and veterans who had been wounded on missions also shared their personal experiences during the exercise. Conscripts who had completed a paramedic training course had the opportunity to collaborate with reserve and active-duty doctors and nurses to reinforce their first aid skills in field conditions.
