Good medical training saves lives. However, if a manikin doesn’t look like a real patient, part of that training is inevitably incomplete. The Spanish manufacturer Emulant Solutions has come up with solutions that make existing manikins more realistic without having to buy new ones. Here, we’ll highlight what’s new and why it’s worth paying attention to.
Why is realism so important in medical training?
While traditional manikins are useful, they do not look like most real-life patients. Practicing procedures such as attaching an EKG, auscultation, or defibrillation on a manikin with a disproportionate body shape, leaves students poorly prepared for their actual work.
Emulants, or overlays, are the solution here: durable silicone covers that are simply placed over an existing manikin. The result is a highly realistic appearance, which in turn fosters greater emotional engagement among medical staff- together, these factors make the simulation experience effective.
What do the overlays offer?
The overlays are made of high-quality silicone and handcrafted: they feature a skin-tone color and realistic hair. It takes only a few minutes to attach and remove the overlays, and they fit most common manikin models.

Two exciting updates for 2025/2026
- Double mastectomy overlays
The new supplementary cover includes removable training breasts with palpable tumors, which may be a necessary addition to oncology and surgical training.
- ECG Installation Trainer
A standalone training aid for practicing the precise placement of ECG electrodes on a realistic anatomical model. This is a skill required on a daily basis in both emergency medicine and internal medicine departments, yet it is often practiced too little.
